Chiellini supports the Super League .. and calls for reducing the number of Italian teams

Veteran Italian international defender Giorgio Chiellini stressed the need for the presence of the European Super League, at the same time, calling for a reduction in the number of teams in the Italian League.

The controversial proposal for a breakaway Super League was announced last April, which would include the “Big Six” Premier League teams along with Juventus, Inter and Milan from Italy, and Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona from Spain.

After intense criticism from governing bodies and fan groups, the six English teams, as well as Inter, Milan and Atletico, withdrew from the agreement, but Barcelona, Real and Juventus stuck to the plan, while attempts by UEFA to punish the trio were unsuccessful.

While the majority of players opposed the proposal, Juventus captain Chiellini believes that is exactly what European football requires.

“I spoke to the president of (Juventus) a few years ago about this,” Chiellini, who will miss Friday’s match between Italy and Switzerland in the European qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, due to injury, told DAZN Italia television.

“The future of football is increasingly oriented towards a European approach compared to the domestic leagues. A player at the level of Juventus wants to play these matches with all due respect,” Chiellini added.

“Athletes of our level, and perhaps also the fans, want to see more of these matches at European level,” Chiellini said.

“We have reached the point of no return. Institutions, clubs and players must come together to reform the calendar and create new competitions to re-launch this sport, which remains the most beautiful in the world, but can also be developed,” the Italian star stressed.

“In the United States, who are good at this kind of thing, they’ve created super leagues in every sport.”

Chiellini also believes that Serie A should be modified and ideally reduced to 16 teams.

“We have to go back to 16 teams, but I think 18 teams will allow the league to be more competitive and give more space for European level matches,” Chiellini revealed.
