Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and midfielder Marco Reus will miss Germany’s squad for their upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifier against Armenia on Sunday after coach Hans Flick decided to rest them due to heavy matches.
Leon Zgoritska, who was hit in the face during Germany’s 9-0 victory over Liechtenstein last Thursday, and suspended defender Antonio Rudiger, is also absent from the German squad, which secured qualification for the finals.
The German national team also misses five players due to quarantine procedures, after it was confirmed that defender Niklas Zule had been infected with the highly contagious and spreading Corona virus.
“Manuel and Marco have been in a lot of matches so far, and we have taken this decision to lighten them up so that they can have some breathing room before the next matches they will have to play in,” coach Flick said in a press conference on Saturday.
Flick indicated that Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen will start Sunday’s match, as well as midfielder Kai Havertz.
Germany has already secured the top spot in Group X and qualified directly for the finals to be held in Qatar with 24 points, while North Macedonia is second with 15 points.
