Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi on Tuesday expressed his delight at the progress the team has made since taking charge as the Italian champions move closer to qualifying for the knockout stage of the Champions League for the first time in ten years.

Inter host Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday, and if they win, they will qualify for the round of 16 for the first time since the 2011-2012 season, with a match before the end, provided that Sherif Tiraspol, from Moldova, does not beat Real Madrid in the other Group D match.

In the Italian league, Inter Milan ended Napoli’s unbeaten record in the competition this season, after rebounding and winning 3-2 at the San Siro stadium, reducing the difference with its leaders to four points, which increased Inzaghi’s happiness.

“The team is making progress and we are on the right track, but there is still a long way to go,” Inzaghi told reporters on Tuesday. Every coach has his own way. I found a great ambiance here. Everyone welcomed me since I came to the club, we have made great progress. The victory over Napoli will give us an important morale boost even though we have played well against many other strong teams this season.

Inzaghi will not underestimate rival Shakhtar Donetsk, bottom of the group, led by Italian coach Roberto De Cherpi, who left Sassuolo at the end of last season.

He said: “We know Shakhtar, as well as coach Roberto de Cherpi very well and his way of playing. It will be a tough European match between two teams that play beautiful football. Reaching the next round in the competition is in our hands.
