Liverpool will not seek revenge

Atletico Madrid may have knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League two seasons ago, but coach Diego Simeone doesn’t expect either side to have that game in mind when they meet at Anfield in Group B on Wednesday.

Simeone’s team scored two goals in extra time at Anfield to achieve a thrilling 4-2 victory in the aggregate result of this confrontation that took place in the round of 16 against European champions Liverpool at the time.

But after losing 3-2 to Jurgen Klopp’s men in Madrid in mid-October, Atletico will be determined to take something out of the match as they sit second in the group with four points, equal with Porto but five points behind Liverpool.

“I understand that we are talking about two big teams with two great stadiums,” Simeone said in a press conference on Tuesday.

And he continued: The Anfield match is in the past, we won it and progressed. These things will not come back. It will be a match that Atletico fans will remember but will not be a factor in Wednesday’s game.

Atletico is missing key players such as French striker Antoine Griezmann, who is suspended for being sent off against Liverpool in the previous match. Defender Stefan Savic is also suspended due to suspension, while midfielders Thomas Lemar and Marcos Llorente suffer injuries.
